The Library Project
Breaking news! We're thrilled to announce that the Library & Archives at Cultra is back and better than ever! Prepare to be amazed by one of the most extensive collections of books, periodicals, manuscripts, and recordings in the entire region.
Contact UsThis remarkable collection represents the combined wealth of publications and research from the Ulster Folk Museum, Ulster Transport Museum, and the Ulster Museum, painstakingly amassed over several decades.
The library's origins can be traced back to the early 1960s when it first operated at Cultra Manor. Over the years, it accumulated a wealth of publications and research materials, resulting in a substantial collection of cultural and historical significance. The present purpose-built library was opened in 1981 as part of the new Administration block for the then Ulster Folk & Transport Museum – now National Museums NI headquarters.
In latter years, due to limited resources and staffing despite the vastness of its collection, it operated with only one staff member and experienced part-time opening hours. Recognising the importance of preserving and promoting this invaluable resource, National Museums NI has made a concerted effort in recent years was undertaken to bring it up to date and fully unlock its potential.
In 2020, a comprehensive reorganisation process was initiated under the leadership of the long-serving Librarian, Roger Dixon. This endeavour aimed to modernise the premises, improve accessibility, and enhance the capacity of the Library & Archives. The project involved a thorough examination of holdings, digitisation efforts, cataloging, and engaging with stakeholders to raise awareness of its value and significance.
The positive transformations achieved during this period were made possible through investments in staff, infrastructure, and resources. The Library & Archives received new shelving in the bookstacks, a reading room, and side offices, allowing for the accommodation of thousands of additional titles. Furthermore, aesthetic improvements, such as new furniture, a refreshed carpet, and a vibrant paint job, revitalised the environment and provided an inviting atmosphere for researchers and visitors.
Alongside the physical enhancements, efforts were made to streamline operations, address cataloging backlogs, and digitise valuable documents. The Sound Archive, working in tandem with the Library & Archives, underwent extensive digitisation and cataloging as part of the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage project from 2018 to 2021. This effort significantly expanded the resources available to researchers interested in audio materials.
Through the dedication of an extended team of four staff members and the invaluable support of passionate volunteers, the Library & Archives at Cultra has once again become a thriving hub of knowledge and research. Group tours, increased access for researchers, and a renewed engagement with stakeholders have further elevated its prominence and impact within the community.
Today, the National Museums NI Library & Archives proudly stands as one of the most extensive collections of its kind in the entire region. With its wealth of books, periodicals, manuscripts, and recordings, it serves as a treasure trove for anyone seeking to explore and understand the rich cultural heritage of the area.
Visitors can now experience the revamped Library & Archives firsthand, as it is open from Monday to Friday, operating between 10:00 and 17:00. For more information, inquiries, or to arrange a visit, interested individuals can reach out to the Library & Archives team via email or phone.
